Weekly Picks of Stocks (10/19/2020)

Q3 Earnings season is in full swing this week.  Lots for financial and tech companies will report.  Big ones include Netflix, Tesla, Coca Cola and Verizon.

Last week financial companies earnings mostly beat analysts estimates despite the increase in Q3 analyst expectations and Covid-19.  However, overall markets ended the week flat.

The upcoming tech earnings and how the market behaves could serve as a good indicator of how the market will behave in the following weeks as more tech companies report.

Weekly Picks of Stocks (10/05/2020)

US President Donald Trump’s Covid-19 diagnosis was the biggest news last week.  Trump’s age group puts him in the high risk of becoming severely ill from the virus.  Although, he’s expected to get the best care and recover from the virus it will create uncertainties in the market and as expected there was a sell-off on Friday.  However, historically any uncertainties due to the health or life of US President has been short lived.  Woodrow Wilson influenza, Eisenhower heart attack, and even Reagan(assassination attempt) did not cause long term declines in the stock market.

Domino’s Pizza also reports this week and is trading at an all time high.  They are expected to beat the earnings estimates. Is their current run up from the expected earnings beat?

Weekly Picks of Stocks (09/21/2020)

Nasdaq continued to slide last week.  It has dropped just under 10% in first 3 weeks for September.  Apple, Google, Facebook, Netflix and Amazon have all lead the way.  Tesla on the other hand has been going up despite not getting into the S&P500.  This may be largely due to ‘Battery Day’ on Sept 22 when Tesla will unveil their new battery.  The expectations are high for this announcement.  Will it be the news that  shifts the market in bulls favor?

Corporate earning season continues this week.  Some big companies(Nike, Costco, & Carmax) are reporting.  Last week FDX and ADBE better than expected earnings did not help those stocks.  They instead were dragged down by the overall market.  Will it be different this week?  Nike, Costco & Carmax are expected to beat the estimates.

Weekly Picks of Stocks (Sep 14, 2020)

Nasdaq dropped slightly over 4% last week.  For those of you interested in stats that’s the most since March following Covid-19 shutdowns. Will the correction continue this week?  There isn’t any news expected to suggest otherwise.  Best to prepare for a sideways moving market at least until the next earnings season or if the Fed pushes another relief package.

There is an Apple event on Sept 15.  This is when they typically announce new phones.  However, this year no significant news is expected from this event.  Apple is down 18% from their highs after the 4:1 split.

Covid-19 rates continue to decline in some states but in others mainly in CA they continue to rise.  How has the job market reacted to this?  We’ll know this Friday as July’s job will be released on Friday Aug 7, 2020 by the US Labor Department.

Congress in the meantime continues to debate the next stimulus package.  Democrats want a $3T package and extension to the $600/Week unemployment benefits as the 1st one expired last Friday.  Republicans want a $1T package but limitations on the extension to the unemployment benefits.  The decision is supposed to be between Aug 10 – Sept 6.  Will both parties close the gap in their relief packages and reach a decision by then?
